This year's hurricane season has been especially cruel to people in the Gulf Coast region. Less than a month after Hurricane Katrina made landfall and caused grave destruction, Hurricane Rita moved over the same area. These massive storms have devastated sections of the region, and have left thousands of Americans displaced or homeless and without critical necessities.

Restoring the lives of the victims is expected to take months -- which is why your help is needed to get them back on their feet. The following organizations offer ways to help, from cash donations to volunteering your time.

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross provides food, shelter, counseling, and financial assistance to the victims affected by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.

America's Second Harvest
This organization is dedicated to distributing truckloads of food that have been donated by companies and citizens. Every dollar donated can help distribute nearly four bags of food to families in need.

Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund
Led by former Presidents Bush and Clinton, this fund collects cash donations to serve the long-term recovery plan for all the states affected by the storm.

Family-to-Family
This organization allows you to sponsor a family in need by sending much needed supplies directly to a family that has been assigned to you.

Habitat for Humanity
At Habitat for Humanity's website, you can donate cash or sign up to help build a new home for a family whose house was destroyed.

The Salvation Army
Donations to The Salvation Army are used to provide food, clothing, and other services to the victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. A $100 donation can provide a family of four with two days' worth of food, two cases of water, and a range of cleaning supplies.
