Is Aspirin the Answer?

When it comes to drugs, it's not always easy to know what makes for a good mix.

Q. I've read about the benefits of taking aspirin daily. Should I do it, even if I take omega-3s?

A. Though some pairs go great together (beer and nuts) and others don't (salami and sorbet), when it comes to drugs, it's not always easy to know what makes for a good mix. Aspirin and omega-3s are a powerful combo, so we recommend talking to your doc before you take them, alone or together. Both decrease inflammation in your arteries, lowering your risks of heart disease and stroke, and possibly even warding off memory loss. Omega-3s may also reduce the risks of depression and arthritis, while aspirin may help prevent colon, breast and prostate cancers.

For typical men over 35 and women over 40, we recommend 162 mg of aspirin (that's two baby aspirin or half a regular one). Take it with a large glass of water to help avoid potential gastrointestinal side effects. For omega-3s, gulp two grams of distilled fish oil (look for products with the omega-3s EPA or DHA) or eat four ounces of fatty fish three times a week.
