1. Dark chocolate. In a recent study, volunteers who ate 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate (the gourmet kind that's 70 percent cacao) every day for a week raised their HDL by 9 percent. That's a load of chocolate (about 550 calories' worth!), but study coauthor Paul A. Gurbel, MD, of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, says eating smaller daily doses (say, 1/2 ounce) over an extended period of time should also help.

after the CHIP plan for a month (also from Loma Linda University), these do make sense-in moderation. The CHIP diet with 1 hour of exercise each day did lower cholesterol dramatically (both LDL and HDL) but the ratio did improve slightly.

Another thing about chocolate in large quantities is it can deplete iron as can tea. I guess that you have to "weigh" the positives and negatives according to your personal situation.

I love dark chocolate, but this is too much. It's not worth the calories. If you want results, just exercise, since exercise has been shown again and again to raise HDL.
