13 Things a Burglar Won't Tell You

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

3. I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what he was doing. It’s human nature.
4. I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

5. I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier than you think to look up your address.

7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation.

8. If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Though I live in a small town, I live 1 block from the only "highway". As a prime target (close enough for interest, far enough away to go undetected) I have a large black dog, with big white teeth, & a VERY protective attitude. I, also, have the best deterrent: 3 wonderful old ladies who are VERY nosy neighbors. Because of this, they get LARGE Christmas gifts every year! They've saved our house twice since we've moved in. Now we have strict rules: do NOT leave town without notifying them.

I arm my system even when I'm in the house during the day; close my blinds ALWAYS by dark-don't like to be in a fishbow-an invitation to snoops, have a note laminated by my doorbell "if we don't know you, we don't answer the doorbell"..in hopes a burglar would not know whether I'm home or not, knowing I don't know him and am not answering the door.

Great tips, but I haven't done any of these things. I never leave my door unlocked, I don't let foreign people in my house unless it is to let in scheduled maintenance workers where I live (they have the key anyway, which I don't like), I don't open my windows or open my blinds all the way, and I don't even use facebook of myspace (as a former computer science major, I know how easy it is to find out about a user). It is so important not to have a false sense of security.
