Blister-Proof Your Feet

Prepare your feet for summer's adventures.

A picnic, a doze in the sun, a hike in the woods.

That was yesterday. Today you're nursing a huge blister. Both ill-fitting shoes and moisture -- sweat -- cause sore-making friction, says Atlanta podiatrist Perry Julien, who offers these tips for happy feet:

  • Sprinkle powder in shoes to keep them dry.

  • Put Vaseline on problem-prone areas, like heels.

  • Feet still sweaty? Apply antiperspirant on them before a hike. One study found that this habit significantly reduced the occurrence of blisters.

  • On the trail, when you feel a sore forming, remove your shoe and cover the blister with a Band-Aid (you know, from the first-aid kit you always carry on a hike).
