Doctors have always used blood tests to detect disease. Now new high-tech tests can check for hundreds of conditions at once. Companies like Biophysical and MyMedLab draw your blood, look for biomarkers for everything from cancers to arthritis, and then give you a detailed report.
Why do it?
To catch a problem before you even have symptoms. It can also give your doctor baseline levels for future comparisons.
Who should get it?
Mehmet Oz, MD, recommends the tests if you're between 40 and 65 or have vague symptoms, like extreme fatigue. The workups can be costly (around $100 to over $1,000) and aren't covered by insurance. But if you have the cash, it can give you peace of mind -- and maybe even save your life.
