Note: More studies are needed before any of these findings can be proposed for widespread use as cancer preventives.
Breast Cancer. Researchers at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute found that postmenopausal patients who had been treated for early stage tumors had a 24% lower recurrence rate when they followed a low-fat diet. Another study suggested that cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may reduce breast cancer risk by more than half.
Colon Cancer. Statins may also protect against colorectal cancer, according to researchers at the University of Michigan and the CHS National Cancer Control Center in Israel. Statin use was associated with a 47% reduction in the risk.
Aspirin may reduce the risk of colon cancer recurrence, and it may also improve survival. Scientists from the Cancer and Leukemia Group, a national clinical research firm, found that patients who had undergone surgery and chemo and who took aspirin every day or every other day had a 50% lower risk of recurrence and death.
Prostate Cancer. Studies show that some men at high risk for developing prostate cancer may benefit from the breast-cancer drug toremifene (Acopodene) or from taking green tea tablets.
