The best way to prevent skin cancer is to stay out of the sun. But if you're going to risk the rays, use at least an SPF 15 sunscreen (and lots of it) every day all year long, not just when you hit the beach in the summer.

That will be easier than ever when SPF soap (yes, soap!) hits the shelves later this year. In the meantime, try some of these innovative ways to keep your skin safer right now.

1. After slathering sunscreen on your child, stick SunSignals UV Sensors on her skin or clothing. As she spends time in the sun, the patch changes color, indicating that she needs to find some shade or it's time to reapply sunscreen (sunhealthsolutions.com; $5 for 18; adult version too).

2. Coppertone Continuous Spray makes applying sunscreen simple. New technology means you can spray it, in SPF 15 and 30, upside down or any direction to reach those hard-to-get spots, such as the back of the knees (at drugstores; $8.99).

3. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 55 contains Helioplex, a new technology that blocks more UVA rays. It leaves skin soft, not greasy (at drugstores; $9.49).

4. Guys, protect yourself with Jack Black Oil-Free Sun Guard. The super-light SPF 20 cream moisturizes and protects the face, scalp and body (getjackblack.com; $16).

5. With L'Oréal's Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Lotion, you'll look bronzed, not orange and streaky. Better yet, it's SPF 15 (at drugstores; $8.99).

6. Worried about the effects of the sun on your hair? Protect your locks with Warren-Tricomi PureStrength Cabana Hair Shield with SPF (warrentricomi.com; $30).

7. One Dermalogica wipe shields your whole body (dermalogica.com; $22 for 15 wipes).

8. Protect your face from the sun while fighting the signs of aging with new Nivea Visage Q10 Advanced Wrinkle Reducer Lotion (at drugstores; $10.99).

9. Wash your clothes in SunGuard, a detergent that makes garments block UV light, so the sun's rays don't pass through the fabric. One application lasts up to 20 washes (sunguardsunprotection.com; $1.99 per box).
