Medication side effects can range from unpleasant (a rash) to fatal (heart problems). But some drugs come with pleasant surprises:

Inhaled steroids. Women who used these for asthma were 65 percent less likely to die from heart disease over five years than asthmatic women using other treatments, says a Nurses' Health Study report. Inhalers also cut the overall risk of early death by 42 percent, likely thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Erythropoietin (EPO) shots. Used to treat anemia, these have been shown to improve brain function in people with schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis. A new study with mice suggests that the drug could sharpen healthy brains, too-not by enhancing the blood but by affecting neurons.

AcipHex and Aricept. In lab tests, researchers found that the ulcer medication AcipHex may benefit depression, migraine, and Parkinson's patients, and the Alzheimer's drug Aricept might ease depression.

Finding new benefits for existing drugs can save time and money because they've already been proven safe. But further research is needed to show whether they're effective in people with these conditions.
