Think you may be having a heart attack? Don’t mull it over -- call 911 and let the experts decide. Most heart attack deaths happen in the first hour after an attack begins, yet many people wait several hours before calling for help. If you or someone you love has chest pain or any of the telltale symptoms listed here for more than a few minutes, call an ambulance immediately.

Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. It can be uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.

Shortness of breath. This symptom may occur with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, lightheadedness, or overwhelming fatigue.
