Here's a rarely discussed reason some women throttle back on exercise: They hate getting wet. In a recent Italian study of stress incontinence (in which urine can leak because of pressure on the bladder from a sneeze or a jump, for instance), one in ten women with the problem was so bothered that she quit playing sports.
In the United States, the National Association for Continence estimates that 25 percent of adult women experience episodes of leaking urine. The odds of incontinence increase with age -- but even college athletes can experience occasional leakage. Still, you don't need to ditch your workout. A doctor with experience in treating incontinence can determine what version of the problem you have: stress, urge (in which you have trouble reaching the bathroom in time), or some other variety. The many treatments include exercises, drugs, and surgery.
