Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, found that insomniacs who learned Kriya yoga -- a form of meditation that helps focus and calm the mind -- slept more soundly and woke less often after two months than those who didn't get the training.
Another recent study showed about 50 percent less tossing and turning when people used a technique called mindfulness meditation along with cognitive behavioral therapy (a kind of talk therapy). Meditation is simple to do -- though it takes commitment, says mindfulness researcher Jason Ong, PhD. Most volunteers fell short of the requested 30 minutes daily. Still, the research suggests it holds promise as a drug-free way to tackle chronic sleep woes.
