Improved drugs may be the answer for many of the 7.5 million people with psoriasis whose red lesions won't fade with current treatments.
Stronger Rx. An injectable drug called ustekinumab could gain approval as early as this fall. It dampens the immune response, which in psoriasis patients is overstimulated, causing inflammation and a buildup of skin cells that form plaques, says Abby Van Voorhees, MD, of the Psoriasis and Phototherapy Treatment Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
New OTC. The cream Psorent is based on an old compound called LCD (made from coal tar) but doesn't leave the stains on the skin or the odor that LCD does. "We're not sure how it works, but it does," says Harvard dermatologist Alexa Kimball, MD.
Natural method. Many patients say stress causes flare-ups. "Mindful meditation, with other therapies, allows my patients to be more tranquil," Dr. Van Voorhees says.
