As we start 2008, many of us will vow to make at least one stab at self-improvement. If you're married, here's a resolution that may be a lifesaver: Next time you and your spouse argue, say what you feel. In one ten-year study, about one in four women and one in three men said they held back during a spat. And women who did so were four times as likely to die during the study period. For men who didn't speak up, health wasn't measurably affected. Since women typically live longer anyway, guys still may want to open up. It could help them last long enough to keep their other resolutions.

As an obstetrician, I sometimes see unusual tattoos when working in labor and delivery. One patient had some type of fish tattoo on her abdomen. "That sure is a pretty whale," I commented. With a smile she replied, "It used to be a dolphin."
