Chemicals, obesity and smoking have all been linked to Alzheimer’s. New research reveals potentially helpful ways to sidestep the disease.

Diet: At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, mice who drank the equivalent of five sodas a day for six months did worse on memory tasks than those who drank plain water. They also had more than twice the amyloid plaque in their brains (a sign of Alzheimer’s) and gained 17 percent more weight than the others. It’s unclear if the sugar or weight gain was more to blame, but cutting back seems like a good idea.

Personality: People who described themselves as goal-oriented and able to control impulses were less likely to develop the disease, according to a study of 997 people. One theory: Conscientious types are better able to cope with distress.

Toxins: Baby monkeys exposed to lead showed Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, including amyloid plaque, years later, according to a recent study.
