5 Ways You Can Promote Reading

Find out how you can foster a love of reading at home, in school and in your own community.

We asked you to choose the cause that matters most to you. Your votes are in and the winner is literacy and education. On October 3, 2009, Reader's Digest will rally behind this cause on Make it Matter Day. In the meantime, here are 5 simple ways you can promote reading and literacy.

1. Read to your kids or grandkids every day. By getting your child into the habit of reading, you will help her develop a passion for books.

2. Help improve the reading skills of children and adults by volunteering to tutor with a literacy program. To find an opportunity near you, visit Literacy Directory.

4. Share your enthusiasm for literacy by volunteering at your local school. Whether you read a story to your child's class or volunteer as a reading tutor in an after school program, both you and the students will be enriched by the experience of teaching one another.

5. Donate books to your local library or school. Donate your old books or volunteer to purchase new books on a child's summer reading list. Help provide books to kids who need them most by visiting The Literacy Site.
