The Person: Stevie Peacock
The Cause: Project KINDNESS

Arcadia, FL--When Hurricane Charley destroyed Memorial Elementary in the low-income community of Arcadia, Florida, in 2004, the students of Pine View School for the Gifted in Osprey, Florida, decided to help. Stevie Peacock was one of the students from Pine View who helped collect school supplies, books, shoes, and money for the children affected by the hurricane. When the school year ended and the collections were going to stop, Stevie realized that Arcadia was still in desperate need of support.

Families living in Arcadia--a town made up mostly of migrant farmers--struggled to provide their children with basic living needs and school supplies after Hurricane Charley hit. Stevie knew that if she were in that situation, she would want people to help her. So in 2005, she started Project KINDNESS (Kids In Need Deserve New Elementary School Supplies) to continue the efforts her school had started.

Stevie began contacting friends, families, and businesses to ask for donations (of products or money) to obtain school supplies, art supplies, and backpacks for the students of Memorial Elementary. Since she began Project KINDNESS three years ago, Stevie has given every incoming kindergartner new school supplies. In addition, she's been able to supply gift bags to all students on Halloween, and in 2006 she provided each of the 1,000 students of Memorial with a Christmas gift.
