The Person: Sam Stone, M.D.
The Cause: Good Samaritan Medical Clinic

Over the past six years in Chester County, South Carolina, Sam Stone, M.D., has tirelessly given his time to serve patients at the area's only full-time free clinic.

Dr. Stone was instrumental in the Good Samaritan Medical Clinic’s start-up in August 2002. He started the clinic because he realized the need to serve the community in which he lived. He worked with local churches, the community hospital, and other practitioners, to make the clinic a reality.

The area of South Carolina where the clinic is located suffers from near 12 percent unemployment and a 25 percent uninsured rate.

The medical clinic operates full-time and provides free doctor office visits, medications, lab and X-ray tests, physical therapy, nurse-only visits, consults and referrals, HIV testing, and clinic and patient education. It has seen more than 2,300 patients who are low income and uninsured since its opening. The clinic also has a current active patient load of nearly 1,100 people.

Dr. Stone gives doctor hours to the clinic, but also serves on its board of directors and as its volunteer medical director -- all while running the only major medical practice in Chester County.

He is totally selfless in his community service!

My boss's wife, Sherry, was exasperated with her younger sister, who bought an unreliable car and called her for a ride every time it broke down. One day Sherry got yet another one of those calls. "What happened this time?" she asked. "My brakes went out," her sister said. "Can you come and get me?"

"Where are you ?" Sherry asked.

"I'm in the drugstore," her sister responded.

"And where's the car?"

"In here with me."
