The Person: Judy Hoff
The Cause: Queen -- It's a New Day

Lynnwood, WA -- Pastor Judy Hoff realized there were many women in her community going through tough times who truly deserved a day to make them feel special. She saw this as another opportunity to do something to help better her community -- that is when the idea of Queen -- It's a New Day was conceptualized.

For the last six years, Hoff, the president of the Recovery for Life Training Center, has held an event called Queen -- It's a New Day, a program that invites women from homeless shelters and transitional programs in three Washington counties to become queens for a day. The women are treated to a complete makeover, including hair, makeup, and clothing, and even given a special Navy escort to take them to dinner.

Many of these women go on to complete a 12-month transitional program, offered by Hoff's Recovery for Life Training Center, which teaches self-sufficiency. Several women have even come back years later to join the Queen -- It's a New Day team so they can give a special day to another deserving woman.

Our sergeant major was dimmer than a dying lightning bug. One day, I found a set of dog tags with his name on them in the shower. So, of course, I returned them. "Wow!" he said. "How'd you know they were mine?"
