National Word Power
Champions

Q. Why is the program being suspended?
A. The Word Power Challenge program enjoyed the support of educators and parents while serving as a catalyst for many students to increase their vocabulary skills. The Reader’s Digest Association suspended the National Word Power Challenge for the 2007-2008 school year and continues to evaluate the program in every respect, including scope, mission, and model for implementation. One of the earlier decisions is moving The Word Power Challenge to Weekly Reader.

Founded in 1902, Weekly Reader publishes 15 magazines for students in every grade from preschool through high school, and offers curriculum-rich, engaging material in both print and electronic formats. Weekly Reader magazines have been recognized for their outstanding text and design, and their effectiveness in improving student performance. Every one of the magazines has won awards for excellence in educational journalism. Weekly Reader magazines currently serve approximately nine million students and 250,000 teachers nationwide. Weekly Reader Publishing Group is part of the Reader's Digest Association, Inc.

Q. Will the program be available in the future?
A. The Weekly Reader Word Power Challenge will not be launching in the 2008-2009 school year. Stay in touch with us as we continue to streamline the program and expand our partnerships!

In the meantime, we will continue to boost English language skills through the Word Power column featured in every issue of Reader’s Digest magazine, through our popular and respected Weekly Reader classroom magazines and teacher resources and, through the Daily Word Power Challenge feature at the Weekly Reader Website (weeklyreader.com).
