I am a firm believer in you get what you give. If you give respect, you get respect. You teach by example. Parents of the past two decades have lost sight of their priorities. Kids need and want the love of their parents, and not just in materialistic expression. They need the emotional and physical interactions more than the other. Children are little people, they respond to us the way we respond to them. Boundaries and expectations must be outlaid from the start.
I am a grandmother, and am dealing with this lack of love, care, etc. from them, 2 granddaughters, and when I think of all the love I gave them from the time they were babies, I am crushed, so crushed, that the remaining years I have, are not going well enough to make me positive about anything in my life. I just cannot believe it! From observing the youth of today in areas of theatres, lobbies, stores, etc, I'm not surprised at this bad behavior shown to me, thanks to lack of stay at home moms.
