When I had a 1996 Chevy Cavalier, I averaged 35 mpg and wasn't even careful about how I drove; what made the difference was a manual 5-speed transmission.

I own an Acura MDX and have been watching my MPG on screen. It's like instant gratification. I can immediately see that leaving my foot on the pedal lowers my Average. I am much more conscious about my MPG as most folks are these days. Bye, Bye 80's, Hello 60-65's. I am happier for it. :)
This is a great artical. A little radical but right on the money. I have been pushing for better gas mileage in my cars for a couple of years now(coasting to stop signs etc.) I never shut the car off when coasting. If more people would just ease away from the stop signs and coast up to them, drive slower, and car pool we could save billions of barrels of oil a year. At 55 mph with coasting and easing I average 35mpg with my 1998 chevy cavalier. (29 to 30 mpg otherwise)
