My son struggled to learn the basics of reading at first. To help, I would read aloud an entire book while we used the illustrations to predict what the next pages would say. Then we'd read the same book again only we'd alternate pages. Finally on the third reading he had confidence to read to me. My son is now an eighth grader and has found his favorite genre to be war stories. He now reads nightly mostly by himself but enjoys telling me about the book when he finishes it.

I am an inveterate bookworm and I'm always reading - because my kids like to copy my behavior they too are always grabbing a book, they'll even "read" the newspaper!

By giving a child an incentive, like a harmless sweet and candies.

Get the book "How to get your child to love reading" by Esme Raji Codell. It has lots of book titles on many different subjects to get ideas of what to check out for your kids at the library. Plus games/activities to do at home to get kids into reading. I got my 7 year old who hated reading over the summer into reading all the time now...just buy introducing her to books that were unusual stories. Also, we do a weekly literary tea to share what we read.
