Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI)
Vision Rehabilitation Center
The MEEI Vision Rehabilitation Center is located in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of the Harvard Department of Ophthalmology, in Boston, Massachusetts. The MEEI has been an international leader in ophthalmology and otolaryngology for over 180 years. The Vision Rehabilitation Center has offered vision rehabilitation services for over 25 years to patients with eye conditions that restrict daily activities, mobility, productivity or independence. The Center offers comprehensive rehabilitation based on individual patient goals addressing five specific areas;
  • Reading rehabilitation
  • Activities of daily living
  • Safety
  • Participation
  • Well-being and adjustment to vision loss.
The evaluation by a physician and training by an occupational therapist is covered by Medicare and most third-party insurance.

Exciting recent initiatives have allowed Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary to expand its services for patients with vision loss by enhancing the technology demonstration and training services offered in the Vision Rehabilitation Center. Our occupational therapists offer hands-on training on computer accessibility software and video magnification devices. A wide range of devices, from simple to complex, is available for demonstration and training, for example, a simple computer mouse that has an on-screen magnifier can make a significant difference for patients who need to see detail on the computer monitor, specialized software can allow individuals to ‘listen’ to their email and a digital voice recorder can be used to dial the telephone or keep track of one’s personal calendar.

Its all about independence and healthy aging…despite vision loss!
