1. Eligibility: This Contest is sponsored by The Reader's Digest Association, Inc.. Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Open to all ages. Void in Puerto Rico. Employees of The Reader's Digest Association, or their affiliated or subsidiary companies, and their immediate family members, are not eligible to enter the Contest or to participate in the voting process. Contest is governed by the laws of the USA. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited by law.

Additional Note: Good Food Gardens will only be awarded to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, schools with a valid NCES code or local government entities that serve children and youth.

2. To Enter: The Contest begins on 3.05.09 and ends 6.19.09. To enter, visit rd.com/goodfoodgardens and follow the instructions. Entries will be accepted through 5.15.09.

You will be instructed to provide the following information in 500 words or less:

  • Essay: Why are you applying for a Good Food Garden Grant, and how it will further your school/organization's mission?
  • Population: Please describe the population you serve, including number of children/youth, age range, and percentage eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Please specify who will participate in activities or classes related to the garden.
  • Program: Please describe any nutrition education, cooking classes or other programs that will incorporate the Good Food Gardens into its curricula. How will this fit into the school or center's current programming? Does the school/center have specific curricula or plan for using the garden to teach children about healthy food choices, gardening, cooking etc.?
  • Space/Maintenance: The Good Food Garden will be an enclosed 12 feet x 16 feet outdoor structure and can go on any type of surface. Please describe the area where you intend to place the garden, including the surface (e.g., grass, concrete, roof, etc.), how much sun it gets, and whether there is nearby access to water. If possible, attach a digital photograph of the space. Who will be responsible for ensuring garden maintenance?
  • Authorization/Permits: Will your city/county require permits to build the Good Food Garden structure on your property? If so, please describe the process. If the School Board, Superintendent, Board of Directors or any other entity needs to approve a garden, please provide a letter of support or authorization.

The submission must not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity or other intellectual property rights of any person or entity. Entries submitted in geographic areas in which the entry is not permissible will be disqualified. All submissions must be received by 5.15.09. User voting will take place between 6.10.09 and 6.19.09. In the event of technical difficulties, contest submission and voting dates are subject to change without notice. All entries become the property of Reader's Digest. We reserve the right to use your entry in all print and electronic media, and to edit it for brevity and clarity.

3. Judging: Reader's Digest and Share Our Strength will select 8 Finalists to post on the ReadersDigest.com website (the "Finalists"). Finalists will be selected by Reader's Digest and Share Our Strength based on the following criteria: 40% need; 20% how garden will be utilized; 20% lot/land feasibility; 20% collection and completion of outlined necessary paperwork. All entries will be judged using the criteria stated above. Judges' decisions are final. Members of the public will be invited to review summaries of Finalist entries and vote for their favorite. The Finalist submission to receive the most votes during the public voting process will be the Grand Prize Winner.

4. Prize: Good Food Gardens community garden. The Total Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of the Grand Prize is $10,000.00. The prize is not transferable cannot be assigned, substituted or redeemed for cash. Prize recipient will be required to warrant that they are either a (1) nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, (2) a school with a valid NCES code or (3) a local government entity that serves children and youth. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a similar prize of equal or greater value in the event that the stated prize cannot be awarded due to circumstances beyond the control of the Sponsor. All taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the Grand Prize Winner. Neither the Sponsor nor its affiliates or subsidiaries will be responsible for any loss, liability or damage arising out of the Grand Prize Winner's acceptance or use of the prize. The Grand Prize Winning organization will be required to execute an affidavit of eligibility, and media use release within two (2) weeks from the date of the notification letter or an alternate finalist may be selected.

5. Conditions: Reader's Digest is not liable for late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, garbled or jumbled entries. Sponsor is not liable for any technical malfunctions of any telephone network or lines, computer Internet system, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any email on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading/uploading any materials in this Contest, or other technical difficulties or failures or other errors of any kind. Sponsor is not responsible or liable for any injury or damage to an entrant's or third person's computer and/or its contents, related to or resulting from Contest. Sponsor reserves the right to terminate or modify the Contest at any time for any reason In such a circumstance, finalists and Grand Prize Winner will be selected based on entries received to date of termination. In the event that two similar entries are received, only the entry judged to best meet criteria as set by Reader's Digest will be included in the final judging. Entrants agree to indemnify Reader's Digest, their affiliated and subsidiary companies from and against any and all claims and liabilities arising out of or in connection with this Contest. Any dispute regarding submission of online entry will be deemed submitted by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at the time of entry. "Authorized account holder" is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g. business, educational institute) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any person tampering with the operation of the website or the entry process. All prizes will be awarded.

Grand Prize Winner will be notified by email and regular mail within four weeks of the closing date. All Finalists will be required to agree to the use of their name and likeness and entry for promotional purposes (except where prohibited by law).

6. Odds: The total number of contestants anticipated nationwide is 1 in 1,500.
