It’s cold outside. Bone-chillingly cold. And on a day like today, there’s really only one remedy to help thaw out: a piping hot, soul-warming meal. A cup of soup, a bowl of stew, a helping of pasta or noodles—these are my go-to winter dishes that become even more satisfying the colder it gets. So if you’re looking for a hearty meal, try one of these recipes tonight:

• Soup: I can’t resist broccoli-cheddar soup, and it’s surprisingly easy to make at home. My top recipe is TheKitchn’s Roasted Broccoli & Cheddar Soup. To branch out a little, I’m excited to try is this Basic Green Soup from Eating Well, which we featured in the January issue of RD magazine.

• Stew: A traditional stew recipe that has never failed me is this Basic Beef Stew from Food52. It’s simple, flavorful, and easy on your wallet. If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary, try The Pioneer Woman’s Beef Stew with Beer and Paprika. I made it this week, and the end result is worth the effort!

• Noodles: A recent discovery (and instant classic!) is this Peas, Ham, and Creamy Noodles recipe from the blog Kevin & Amanda, which is my ideal comfort food. For a fresh take on an old classic, Martha Stewart’s Mediterranean Tuna Noodle Casserole with artichoke hearts is at the top of my must-cook-asap list.
