Better Than Reruns: Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars

by Andy Simmons

Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, and Jerry Seinfeld cracking wise.

If you like the three Cs—coffee, cars, and comedians—Jerry Seinfeld’s got the web show for you: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

As you might imagine by the title, each episode revolves around Jerry Seinfeld and a comedian in a car on their way to get coffee. His guests so far include Michael Richards, Colin Quinn, and Alec Baldwin, who takes the time to rag on growing up as part of the Brothers Baldwin. Through it all, you’ll hear jokes, trade secrets, and some car talk. (Jerry, it turns out, is a car nut—each episode has him chauffeuring his friends in a different fantastic ride.)

My favorite episode has Seinfeld tooling around in a 1960 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II along with another 1960s icon, Carl Reiner. Later, Mel Brooks joins them for dinner at Reiner’s home. On the menu: deli sandwiches, with a side of shtick. Brooks, at 85, is still as crazy as ever, and part of the fun is watching Reiner’s clear love and devotion for his old friend, who still has the comedic chops to make Jerry—and me—guffaw.
