Lowbrow Goes Highbrow in ‘Fake Criterions’
by Damon Beres
Most movie dorks are doubtless quite familiar with The Criterion Collection, “a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films” released in tremendously handsome, display-ready packaging.
Now, design dorks are paying homage to this prestige brand and some of their favorite movies over at Fake Criterions, a Tumblr blog that showcases user-created Criterion covers. Some of the featured films (Margaret, say) could conceivably be actual Criterion releases some day while others (“Four Episodes of Cheers“) don’t stand a chance—which is what makes the whole thing a lot of fun.
The blog is updated sporadically, but there have been a number of great new posts this month, making it the perfect time to check it out. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite theoretical Criterion editions below, but you can see the full archive over at fakecriterions.tumblr.com.
