Meet My New Hero: Triple Amputee Todd Love

by Beth Dreher

If you’re like me and you need the occasional shot of pure inspiration, say hello to Marine Cpl. Todd Love. Todd says he was “just doing his job” when he stepped on a mine in Afghanistan in 2010. The explosion left him alive, but gravely injured—he lost both legs and his left arm in the blast. Hundreds of well-wishers welcomed him when he returned home injured to Acworth, Georgia, but the most amazing part of the story started when the cheers died down: The 22-year-old got on with his life. In Todd’s case, life includes surfing, playing Bach, and modeling.

Todd’s latest feat: He and seven friends, two of whom also lost limbs in combat, recently competed in The Spartan Race, a challenging 10.5 mile obstacle course of rope ladders, climbing walls and muddy trails that took the team more than five hours to complete. Don’t miss photos of Todd competing here. When asked about his mindset, the unstoppable vet said he set out to “[prove]  that overcoming obstacles isn’t just something you attempt, it’s something that you embrace.”
