‘Oh, Sandy:’ Views to a Hurricane

by Damon Beres

News reports, tweets, and status updates about Hurricane Sandy—the big, bad storm that’s now hammering the East Coast—are turning into something of a flood themselves, which might be a bit tiresome for those of you who couldn’t care less about a surging Atlantic. But weather like this means tons of fascinating media to pore over, media that’s best experienced as events happen.

Below, I’ve gathered some of my go-to sources for Sandy photos, updates and more: Feel free to chime in with your favorites in the comments field.

Instagram’s #Sandy feed: The smartphone app lets users post high quality images, but you don’t need to be armed with an iPhone to check them out. Head over to Webstagram to see how people are experiencing the storm. Here’s a cool photo from “funkystuffdan,” a user who seems perilously close to the New Hampshire coast, much to our benefit.

Newseum’s front pages map: This is fun—visit the Newseum’s interactive web map and mouse over regions in the East Coast to see how local papers are spinning the storm on their front pages. I like what Virginia’s Daily Press went with: “WET AND WINDY,” featuring some enterprising gents boating their way down a street, reportedly to buy more beer.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Flickr account: New York City’s public transit corporation offers a candid behind-the-scenes look at storm prep. See what goes into protecting a major city’s infrastructure in a time of crisis.

NASA’s views from space: A camera aboard the International Space Station as some awe-inspiring footage of Sandy. Scope the videos here.
