Travel Everywhere (Man!) with Johnny Cash
by Caitlin O'Connell
Johnny Cash has been everywhere (man!) and a clever project from British web developer Iain Mullan lets you follow along visually as Cash names his way across North America. Mullan crafted his tuneful creation for London’s Music Hack Day, a two-day showcase of digital music advances and innovations.
Set to the familiar twang of Johnny Cash’s rendition of “I’ve Been Everywhere,” Mullan’s music video uses Google Maps technology to synchronize location with the song lyrics. It’s a bit slow to start, but once the chorus comes around—”I’ve been to…”—an image of Cash’s head (in place of the standard Google Maps pin) jumps around a map of North America while a counter tracks the total mileage he’s traveled (over 112,000 miles!).
It’s a fun way to enjoy the song, but good luck getting it out of your head afterward.
Note: The video currently plays only in Google Chrome and Safari browsers, so make sure you’re using one or the other before you watch.
