White House Menus Past: Squirrel Stew, Anyone?

But it turns out that a lot of our presidents and first ladies had a real interest in food, according to a fun slideshow at Grub Street.

Dolly Madison adored ice cream and was the first to serve it at the White House. William Henry Harrison’s favorite White House dish? That would be squirrel stew, thank you very much. And William Howard Taft loved turtle soup so much that he kept a chef on staff—full-time—whose only job was to prepare the reptilian delicacy on demand.

The wildest taste buds might belong to Richard Nixon, though. His favorite snack was cottage cheese and pineapple chunks topped with ketchup. I can’t help myself: Tomato-Gate?
