Am I missing something?  What’s so funny about Fifth Third Bank?

    • Aathomic

Well, it makes you wonder what happened to the first 4 incarnations of the bank. Seems kind of shady to me…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YFONHFSEQLW357YQXYYZSRUA2I Chaz

It does?  I thought it was an advertisement at first.  Totally unfunny.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jack-Manning/100003329898948 Jack Manning

Hello! It is the corner streets where the Bank’s home office is located.

    • Lighthouserob

I wondered that as well.  But I’m from SW Ohio, where the bank is headquartered, so I’m used to it.  I don’t think people from outside the area realize the name was a result of the merging of the Fifth National Bank and Third National Bank years ago.

      • http://www.facebook.com/camphoneguy Paul Rentz

Gee, then it should be Eighth National Bank. And fire the naming committee!

        • Anonymous

          Or Fourth?  Split the difference.

        • Joe Danko

I vote for the 5/3 bank. Five divided by 3 = 1.66666666666666….6, an irrational number.

          • louie anderson

5/3 IS rational. it is literally a ratio. you’re thinking of the square root of 2 or some other infinitely long nonrepeating decimal.

          • http://twitter.com/tygrr94 tygrr94

No, sorry, louie – it’s not. It’s an infinite decimal. 3/5 is a ratio. It’s rational.

      • David Reeves

Why not name it SW Ohio Bank or something?  Fifth Third Bank is a stupid name.

        • http://twitter.com/tygrr94 tygrr94

They’re here in NC too. But still, I agree – they should have come up with a better name.

      • Sweerp

Same here, Lighthouserob.  Had to ponder a bit to get past the familiarity before the humor struck me.

        • Steven P. Frank

should have made it the Eighth National bank then

    • TG

Ahhhhh, now I know that a merger resulted in the name. Still, my math teaching says that this should be corrected to the ” 1 2/3 Thirds Bank ”  !!   ;-)
JK… Still a good bank to deal with.

      • Odgredweary

Better than “60% of a Bank” (3/5), no?

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S5DUBX4GIROSHZUOFGKBJZEQUY Vyper

Maybe they should have averaged them and called it the Fourth National Bank….

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002538015902 Jack Flanders

I’d worry more about the bank keeping my balance correct since they can’t do basic addition.

    • Moose

If you have to ask, you’ll never know.

      • Cedric Q. Fussbudget

If you have to ask, you don’t need to know! Besides, if someone told you, they would to kill you.

      • lennie

I think you mean “if you don’t ask ,you’ll never know.”

    • Moose

If you have to ask, you’ll never know.

    • DOUTTFIRE

You wanna put your money in a bank that has an improper fraction for its name?

      • Geary

One thing’s for sure, if it’s only s fifth of a third, it sure ain’t “too big to fail” … Intergerially speaking, of course ..

    • Kristin

Its not funny. The two banks, one of 5th street and one on 3rd, merged.

    • Chrispy50

      Are you serious???

    • Revenuer1

If this is only a fifth of the Third Bank, I want to know what happened to the other four-fifths!

    • Walters915

Maybe it shoudl be called “One Fifteenth Bank” … 1/5 of 1/3 = 1/15.

    • Animalhouse

probably has something to do with it being an improper fraction…..

    • Albert

Each time I see the sign for Fifth Third Bank, I wonder why it is not called 15th Bank (3×5). I also wonder if it is the same as Third Fifth Bank (3×5 = 5×3).

    • Rosketch

Do you want to bank at a venue that can’t do it’s fractions correctly?

    • John

I never heard of Fifth Third until they granted me a my new car loan through the car dealership.  My own lame bank refused me!  I don’t care what Fifth Third Bank is called, they’ve got my business now… and you gotta admit, the name somehow works, quirky as it is.

tis a silly name…and my employer banks there in Charlotte

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/WUU7HNFPCWVXIUOS6R25BQTKAE Tomas

Well, yeah!  What happened to the Fourth Third?  Or the First third, for that matter? ;)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000938443650 Plum Gurly

Is it the fifth or the third bank? Which is it? If it is the fifth, it cannot be the third.

There Is Nothing Funny About Fee/Thrid

    • ttiwkram

I’ve often wondered how drunk some person (or entire committee) must have been to call a bank “Fifth Third;” it’s a dumb name regardless of where it’s located. Why not just call it Fifteenth? I refuse to bank there because the name makes me question their judgment.

    • http://twitter.com/tygrr94 tygrr94

LOL I thought so too – I sat there looking for something funny for the longest time….

  • Emmanuel Arthur

    its a silly name though

  • r11

Fifth Third Bank originated at the corner of 5th and 3rd in Cincinnati, Ohio

    • Brian in MI

5th and 3rd are parallel streets… And 2 blocks apart.

    • http://www.facebook.com/queen.bee.90 Brandi Leigh Hisel

Seriously, if you’re going to try to correct someone, at least do it properly:
      “The Fifth Third name
Fifth Third’s unusual name is the result of the June 1, 1908 merger
of Third National Bank and Fifth National Bank, to become the Fifth
Third National Bank of Cincinnati.[4] While Third National was the senior partner, the merger took place during a period when prohibitionist
ideas were gaining popularity, and it is legend that “Fifth Third” was
better than “Third Fifth”, which could have been construed as a
reference to three “fifths” of alcohol.[5] The name went through several changes over the years until March 24, 1969, when it was changed to Fifth Third Bank.”

Brs5000 5/3 bank:  The 5/3 needs to be reduced to the LCD which would be 1 2/3 Bank.  So why would you want to do your banking at an institution that can’t do 3rd grade math? If you have to explain the joke, it gets funnier and funnier.  I loved trying to explain a joke to my mom, lol.

  • Donwm64

The sign said ” Keep Back or Drown !”

Yes, I missed it on the first look. don’t worry about it, Brs5000.

Haha, those signs are a cure for melancholy on the road, that’s for sure. They’re all pretty amusing, especially sign number three — very cartoonish in the way it’s worded, and the mini-sign at the bottom completes the comedy. It would be great to see more humorous signs like this on the road, as long as the normal signs are still there of course.

    1. Find something vaguely interesting, like the eccentric habits of geniuses (Tesla, Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci), common misconceptions (wooden teeth of Washington, lemmings committing suicide, etc), or hot chicks.
    2. Find several more examples of it.
    3. Put it in list form, like the one you’re reading now. If the list items are too long, break each item down into a sub-list.
    4. Loot Wikipedia or other pop-culture magazines as much as you can. Change a few words and phrases to feign expertise and to make it your own.
    5. Give the article a title with an ironic twist, e.g., “5 Things you do in the bedroom that you think are sexy, but actually aren’t.” or “7 Things from space that could kill you at any moment.”
    6. Link-bait on social networks.

List articles are the stupidest form of news. But at least its better than CNN obsessing over facebook and twitter

Discover the 37 things you should “hoard” before the coming disaster.

Do you guys think we’re ALL idiots or what? This is obscene to anyone with a brain. Nothing like making a buck off of fear that you yourself have created, while blaming it all on the majority who don’t  agree with Fox News.

Just a minute, I finally realized who you’re marketing this to, so never mind that idiots quote. It’s probably appropriate after all.

Fifth Third bank was named for the original bank being at the crossing of Fifth St and Third St. It isn’t very odd if you know the reason for the name instead of thinking it is someone who doesn’t know fractions.

the road closed sign was Photoshopped,  and the “door beel” was from the lack of education; and I bet 5 bucks it was some “poser” that claims to be all politically correct.  I swear, some people have to prove they’ve spent money on quality education, by degrading those whom can’t spell.  Yes, it’s whom, not who…

The name Fifth Third Bank comes from the merger of two large
Cincinnati-based banks, the Fifth National Bank of Cincinnati and the
Third National Bank of Cincinnati. In most mergers, only one name
survives although U.S. business history is full of companies that
adopted some form of joint name.

That “Road Closed” sign is OBVIOUSLY a Photoshop job. Strange lighting, lack of shading, sign position, post looks like it’s not stuck in the ground… this job is not worthy of professional comment.

Fifth Third Bank= one of the worst banks in the nation. They are named after the streets where the original bank branch is located.

I didn’t get the 5/3 bank as being funny either. But here is Wiki’s reason for the name:Fifth Third’s unusual name is the result of the June 1, 1908 merger of Third National Bank and Fifth National Bank, to become the Fifth Third National Bank of Cincinnati.[4] While Third National was the senior partner, the merger took place during a period when prohibitionist ideas were gaining popularity, and it is legend that “Fifth Third” was better than “Third Fifth”, which could have been construed as a reference to three “fifths” of alcohol.[5] The name went through several changes over the years until March 24, 1969, when it was changed to Fifth Third Bank.[4]

I guess us Midwesterners are so used to seeing 5/3 Banks that we just don’t see the humor in this photo. But there are a lot of incorrect information on 5/3 Bank. So brief history lesson:

Fifth Third Bank is the 22nd largest banking institution in the U.S. It is headquartered in Cincinnati and has 1,368 branches in 12 states. It is NOT named after the streets of the headquarters building as 5th and 3rd streets run parallel 2 blocks from each other in downtown Cinci. The headquarters is actually at the intersection of 5th and Walnut. It is named after the merger of Third and Firth National banks in 1908, but celebrates it’s founding as 1858 from the original Fifth National Bank. Most Kroger locations in the Midwest have a 5/3rd Bank branch located inside. Many minor-league ballparks are named after Fifth Third Bank including the baseball minor-league team, the Dayton Dragons which holds the current minor-league record in consecutive sell-out seasons in attendance.
Seriously, a lot of these signs are really not that funny. I have seen a lot better ones to post to an article than these. Guess everyone’s humor is a little different :P

The first time I saw this bank name, I thought it was an odd name for a bank. Not so much funny, but attention getting…

Considering the road closed sign was put up to warn of lava and unexpected eruptions carried an engulfed it in Hawaii, not really that silly. Just be glad it isn’t a photo with a car and people inside. 5/3 Bank? Ho hum. Wells Fargo logo is a wagon pulled by horses harkening back to their history…

First time I ever heard of it, I thought it was an unusual name too–but I’ve been banking with them for a dozen years now and never even give it a thought

I couldn’t take a picture but one of my favorites was at the stairwell entry to a courthouse in Los Angeles. It said “Handicapped facilities…7th floor.”

The sign with the ‘No cussing’ is in VA Beach. If the cops catch you cursing, you’ll get fined at least $100…they want to make sure that tourists don’t get driven away by the ‘local language’, as if they don’t say the same stuff! Lol…
