this was  great! i have always wanted to know what my cats are doing when they do of these things. i have 4 very different cats in my house (all are rescues) . does anyone know what it means when a cat wants you to pet them and will not give up till you do, then they bite(just a love bite) .  what does that mean?

Sorry, but cats touch noses for reasons beyond “hey friend, haven’t seen you in a really long time”. I’ve seen cats nose touching in all sorts of circumstances, including my new cat when I very first introduced it to my 6 yr old cat. The first cat hated the new cat (hissing, swatting), but they still touched noses frequently over the 2 month long introduction process. Now they are friends, and they still touch noses everytime they get together to play or nap or groom. It’s all day long, even if they just saw each other 15 mintues ago. There were other inaccuraces in this piece. The points may be true in certian circumstances but the author has chosen to over simplify the topics, to the point of being wrong on a few things.

Tip #14. When a cat’s tail goes straight up and then forms a question mark curve at the end, it means the cat is happy.  Watch the tail the next time your cat is happily being stroked or comes running to greet you.  If you get that question mark tail, you know he/she’s happy!

@8bf9795cd73d492bdb2ebda1e259af49:disqus  I have a previously feral cat I tamed.  She was completely wild when I first got her at 7 months old.  I’ve had her for almost four years now and she purrs constantly.  I’ve been around a lot of other cats and purring seems to be a personal thing.  Some cats like to purr nonstop, no matter what’s going on or what their mood is, and others almost never purr, no matter what kind of mood they’re in.  If your cat seems to be content most of the time and she isn’t showing signs of being stressed out (cats can be quite subtle about showing stress, though), I would just chalk it up to a personality quirk for her.

My girlfriend and I adopted a 10 month old kitty that was severely abused. The previous owners tried to put him in a plastic bag to drown him but he obviously got away. They also struck him in the face damaging his little nose and causing him breathing difficulties whenever he exerts himself.  When we went to the shelter, all the really cute and really young kittens are at eye level. This poor little guy was in the very bottom cage cowering all the way to the back of the cage. My girlfriend spotted him and we dragged him out for a look. He wasn’t scared, he was absolutely petrified. He didn’t fight us, he was just to scared to move. We had our doubts, but, for some reason when I tried to hold him, he like spun around in my arms and wound up face to face. And as scared as this little fellow was he did the one thing I never expected. He kissed the end of my nose. Repeatedly. That was all it took. We adopted him, gave him the name JASPER, and after a tenuous first couple months of Jasper not leaving the basement, one day, there he was walking around the house like he owned the joint. We love Jasper like a family member. He’s great. He’s doing everything any normal kitty his age does. He loves to play and snuggle with me at night. He’s even starting to “talk” to me. When we wake up I’ll ask him a question and he answers with a low keyed “maaw”. About a year before we got Jasper we had to put down “Chester”. A beautiful chocolate point Siamese. He was in the family for 13 years. So when he got sick, it was a terrible day when we lost him. I cried like a little girl when I carried him into the animal hospital. We both swore that there would be no more pets. Yeah, right. I know I’m being a little long winded here but I would like to get something across to any future kitty cat owners out there. When you go to the shelter to adopt your new friend, be sure and look at ALL the cats. When you find one you like, take it out of its cage & let him get to “KNOW” you. You will, in that little bit of time see his or her personality traits. Whether its aggressive, shy, friendly. Even if its a lap cat or not. Kitty’s wear their hearts on their sleeves, I mean paws, you will learn a lot about our feline friends just by holdig  and talking to them.

I have three rescue kitties of my own; one of whom was feral. They are all different and all very entertaining. I was volunteering at the Petco adoption center, and we had two Siamese kittens. A couple took them out to meet them, and one of them walked up the man’s arm and sat on his shoulder. She was very happy there and not inclined to get down. The man decided the kitten had adopted him, and he and his wife left with both kittens. Yea!

I also have a cat thats about 14yr and he only started purring last year.

make sure every cat lover know not , NOT give cat flea treatment made for dog, my cats and me just through the horrible tradget from I was ignor enough to put spot treatment for dog to my 2 cats, one almost die and now they are still very weak , I am so regreat and i pray the God help to save them, we met a wonderful vet and they are getting better , but it could fatal , so please let everyone who love our car, no permethrin for cat….

That’s nothing. I had a dog that kept coming around and getting my dog. One day I took a pipe bomb and taped it to his side and lite it. About 30 seconds later the dog was almost blown in two.

This one about cats getting sick and dying from eating chocolate is not accurate.  My wife has a DVM and works in a vet clinic and I also am friends with a couple of vets.  We are also cat owners and have been for 16 years.  Our oldest cat is also 16 years old and very healthy and active and does like a little bit of chocolate as a very special treat.  So, this number 7 thing about cats is not accurate.

Thank you so much for your message. i know you were trying to do the best thing for your pets. Two good flea treatment products are Capstar, which is a pill, and Program, which is added to food. Both are safe with no side effects, skin reaction, toxicity, etc. We give Capstar to our 7 cats. It’s not terribly expensive and you can get it from a vet or from an online store like Drs. Foster and Smith. My neighbors have 15 cats, take excellent care of them, and give their cats program. Good luck. I hope everyone who reads this can learn from your experience.

MRSA is actually a drug-resistant bacteria, not a virus, most often carried by humans and passed to the cat by direct contact with an open wound on the cat. Without proper disinfecting of surfaces and proper handwashing, and proper medical treatment, it will easily spread bach and forth among family members and pets.

You can, however, use the tubes of Advantage that are marketed for dogs on cats.  You just don’t use as much, but it’s EXACTLY the same stuff, and it’s vastly cheaper if you buy the big dog-sized tubes rather than the little cat-sized ones.  Most vets will give you a little syringe that you can use to measure smaller doses out of the big tubes, and tell you the right dose for your cat.  The “no dog flea treatment for cats” rule is generally a good one, but Advantage is the exception.  Ask any vet.

Cats are easily overstimulated. This is probably what is happening with yours. Try a firm NO and ignore it and see if it learns. I have two strays who have adopted us and one liked to nip. She has learned fast though and now if she goes to bite I just tell her no in a stern voice and she won’t do it. Good luck. Also some cats are just nippers I have had vets tell me. Hopefully yours is not destined to continue the behavior.

Mine went one up on chasing his tail…he does it in the bathtub where he can “shadow-box.”  It’s a hoot to watch him stalking up on and pouncing at his own shadow!

Wondering what the wonderful breed of the last cat, number 13 in this series is.  She looked more like a fox and was sand colored with dark bands around her front forelegs.  Thanks for the very interesting and informative display.  I’ve owned cats all my like and I am a Senior citizen now and did not know some of the things you revealed. 

I’m an RN and mother of 9 cats.  I just wanted to say something about getting MRSA from cats.  That may be true in some cases, but you are far more likely to get it from another person.  Avoid sharing personal articles with other people.  I have had cats my entire life (long time now) and have never contracted any illness from them.  All mine are strays like many of yours.  Just love them all!!!

I love reading cat-related articles. It helps me know my cat more. I have a black and white Persian cat and he’s a very smart feline. He greets me at the door whenever I arrive home and if I can’t find him anywhere in the house, I’ll just call his name and then he’ll come. He also likes to come in my room at night before I sleep and would snuggle beside me then curl up showing his furry belly. And if he want’s to go out of the room, he would just meow loudly but sweetly at me so I could open the door.  He also knows how to open the door but he can’t because our door knobs are too high for him. I have 8 cats total. 7 of them are strayed. 4 of the 7 came to us when they were kittens and never left. 2 of them I took in when they were kittens. I was about to leave home when i saw them across our home. They were very little and were crying helplessly so i took them in. And one of them is them is newborn. Few years ago, before my Persian and 2 stray kittens, I had a cat that died. It really broke my heart so I swore to never have a new cat at home…then came the 2 kittens and my Persian. I guess we’re just meant to have each other.

I have a ferral cat, rescued at six months of age, who is friendly as can be. She was rescued from grown  men who were playing basketball with her, using her as the ball! She is now 4 years old and loves people, attention and being pet. She is actually more social then my older cat, who was born at home and has been with me for 10 years. 

My cat is named Jasper, too, and I love him very much. Good for you for rescuing your guy.

The cat shown in Picture #9 is a “Sand Cat”, also called “Sand Dune Cat” .  It lives in hot, dry desert climates all across the Sahara.   There is one on display at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.  It is the first one we had ever seen and, at first, wondered why the zoo would have a “domestic” cat on display– until we read the plackard describing this cat.  Doubt that they would make a good pet–even if it were legal to have one, which it is not.  I believe it is also on, or about to be on, the endangered species list…

I have a five-year old Siberian male cat, and he was a biter even when he was a kitten.   Now he weighs over 20 pounds, and sometimes when I’m petting him, he turns around and tries to bite me!   and when he doesn’t get his own way, he chases me and bites my ankles.    What should I do????

this is a Sand Cat, a very small (3 lbs) desert cat that lives in burrows.  they are so cute but very savage for their size-don’t try to pet them.  You can see them at the zoo.

I’m sorry, but to me I don’t like cats, I was petrified  with them since I started to work with a patient that has several cats, she was paralized and you should see whow much flea shes has in her house I was wearing a white uniform and when, I was about to enter to the front door you should see all the fleas cover my uniform. in the night, Because I was cover the grave yard, I have to cover my head, I have to put on my panty hose even do I was wearing some pants but because of the fleas and my body was itching all over. Cats were all around the kitchen jumping from sofas to everywhere.  thank’s God that I only worked with her for a short time.

Sorry you had that experience, did you tell anyone about the fleas when you worked there? Its not the cats fault but something should have been done to take care of the problem for them, the patient and the caregivers health.

Yeah, well, if I leave those plastic “strap bags” where mine can get to them they pee on them! I just make sure not to leave them out. They also get into one of the holes and run through the house with the bag rattling behind them. Kind of a noisy Batman caper I guess. The rest chase the one that’s bagged!

I used to think that about one of my cats too. But one day he allowed me to hold him and I laid my head on his side and there it was! Soooooo low I could never hear it before then.

I’m not sure about this.  They cover it to “save” it for later.  Mine “covers” his food every morning and then comes back to eat it a couple of hours later.

I have a dollar store spray bottle I fill with water and a tablespoon of vinager.  When my cat gets out of hand, biting and clawing I spray him.  Now most times I just have to grab the bottle and he quits the bad behavior.  I hope it helps

There are some cats that just do not purr and some that are stressed all the time no matter what.

My grey cat, Mouse, adopted me as Chief of Staff in 1980.  He traveled the friendly skis a number of times, had strange illnesses from which diligent veterinarians cured him,  ran away a couple of times for extended sojourns elsewhere,  turned white and irritable, and died in 1990.  He was MORE than just a cat;  he had an ineffable spiritual aura about him.  His remains are buried beneath an apple tree in Saddle River, New Jersey. I was honored to have known Mouse.  I think of him daily.

I would not test it although a very small amount may not harm one cat, it could kill another, all cats are not made the same.  Some are much more sensitive than others.

Yep the water and vinegar works well to stop them from doing things but doesn’t mean they won’t do it again another time.

It you don’t let the cats outside, you don’t have fleas.  You could have the same problem with any animal that is not cared for properly, don’t blame the cats.

I am a veterinary technician and it is 100% accurate. Chocolate is toxic to cats. You probably just haven’t given enough to make your cat(s) sick/sick enough to die from it. It’s worse for cats than dogs. Please stop feeding your cats chocolate.

My cat is deaf, but loves to be vacuumed.   We have a dust buster that has an extended nozzle which we vacuum up kitty litter.  When he sees me vacuuming the kitty litter he will run to the vacuum and starting meowing very loudly until I vacuum him.  I tried this on my skin and it doesn’t hurt.

I had a cat that saw my husband leave a roll of paper towels on the floor in the livingroom when he finished washing a window. She grabbed the towels in her teeth dragging them between her front legs taking it to the kitchen, dropping it in front of the cupboard it went in, then looked up at me, meowed like “lazy people”, and walked away. How smart is that?

I am a certified veterinary technician.  It depends on the type of chocolate.  the cooking chocolate is the toxic kind.  semi sweet…sweet cooking chocolate.  My dog once ate an entire box of chocolate covered cherries and although he has some diarrhea….it was not life threatening.  I think it is mainly the high amount of caffeine that is in chocolate.  But one fact for sure is……NEVER give cats TYLENOL.  be very careful if you have children and use liquid tylenol that is flavored because unless you wash the cup immediately, they really like to lick it and it is FATAL.

Sometimes a cat only wants to be petted or scratched in certain places.  One of our cats is ticklish on his sides and bites if you stroke him there.  Another one HATES you to touch her tummy.  If the nip/love bite is followed by the cat pushing their head into your hand, that probably means ‘scratch only my head!’.

THATS REALLY NOT TRUE. . .I HAVE 3, INDOORS NOW.  THEY ARE SO SWEET AND LOVEABLE!

Our 14 year old cat has been with us for all but the first two weeks of her life.  She learned very early on that licking a plastic bag REALLY annoys me, so she knows it is the fastest way to get what she wants.  Thankfully, she only uses it in an emergency–otherwise she will tap my leg with her paw and “talk” to me until I can help her.  She was born with a deformed spine and has never been able to eliminate urine or feces on her own.  She’s a PixiBob and was going to be euthanized because of the deformity.  However, against advice, my husband and I took on her care and have been blessed with the most wonderful friend and companion EVER!  Even if she were to lick plastic bags every day of her life, I would still be just as thankful that she shares her life with us.  

If you watch a mother cat with her older kittens, or two companion cats, when they groom each other they will “bite” or “nip” each other’s cheeks, heads, or necks, and then continue to groom and purr.  It is a high honor to receive a love bite from a cat when it is given during a seemingly gentle moment.  It truly is reserved for those they care for most.  It is a mistake to admonish them for something they use to show affection, but it can hurt none the less.  When my cat gets a little too affectionate with her mouth, I just calmly tell her to be soft, or gentle, then slowly remove my hand then return it to her cheek with a gentle squeeze and continued petting of her face for just a moment.  I then remove my hand so she isn’t overstimulated.  My cats eventually learn to bite a bit softer as I reward them with little love pinches.  Reward goes miles for a cat security and well being where admonishment leads to resentment and could just lead to aggression if done on a constant basis.  When dealing with a cat, think like a cat, and if you don’t know how a cat thinks, then do your research; they are very complex little creatures.

It is still recommended that all refrain from feeding our pets human food. For when we do why then do we wonder how they became so ill? That kind of spoiling is actually a slow death for our lovies.

I have had many cats in my time. I have had adopted as kitten, shelter, ferrell , strays and all have learned what is acceptable and not acceptable. I have learned with my cats that all are trainable. I just had to find what worked with each one individually. My oldest cat knows to come back in the house when I say his name followed by the word IN. That command with actions worked for training all my cats. And, though he is not siamese he does “talk” to me. I watch his tail and body language. He has been a long time companion. Come to think of it, my cat has been more committed than my last two husbands! OUCH!

Thanks to everyone for sharing your kitty experiences.  I care for my cousin’s (rescue) cat when she travels.  Miss Kitty is terrified of strangers and hides from them.  Thank goodness she now considers me a member of her family.  She purrs and I swear tries to speak our language and is very affectionate.  Miss Kitty adopted my cousin one day about 3 years ago.  

I have two cats. Tthe older one,14 yrs or so, has never bitten me.  The younger one was starting to bite me and strange as it may sound when she last tried to bite me, I stuck her head in my mouth.  I didn’t bite her or anything like that but she has made further attempt to bite me and this happened years ago.  My cats will raise their heads if they are doing something they shouldn’t and I call them but they go right back to what they were doing and I have to actually get up to get them to stop.
I have resorted to using a plant spritzer filled with water to correct them when they are bad.  Unfortunitely it has only a temporary effect.  They seem to make their own rules.

I had a neighbor who put out a dish of kisses and other Hershey treats as a Welcome Home for me after she cared for my pets while I was gone.  My dog ate the entire dish of choclate, tin foil and all!  She didn’t have any ill effects except for all her” buisness” glittered red and green for quite awhile all over the back yard.

I was always cautious but somehow my pup smugled it from my young child or found the dropped piece!!

I had her for 16 love filled years, now have 4 cats, equally as rambunctious and loving.  All animals were rescued or just “showed up”.

It means the cat is over-stimulated.

I’ve been into cats for as long as I can remember and knew most of the things written in here and I agree except for number 11.  I train my cats with both reward and punishment and lots of loving.  Like if I command them to go down from a prohibited place (kitchen counter, etc) and they don’t immediately obey, a very slight tap on the forehead does it.

My older cat now does the training for my newly adopted black cat.  She trained her where to do her toilet thingies, which is in their case, the toilet.  And when Haydi, the younger tries to defy rules and climb up the dinner table, Missy growls and snarls.  But they love each other so much and spend a lot of time together, playing or simply licking each other,

I have had 2 cats who do that… I just call it “leaking”  ;-)

The cats were victims – they were not to blame. Under those circumstances, there would have been no difference if she had dogs rather than cats.

Several Flea & Tick meds have been linked to cancer. I use “Natural Defense” instead. It works well, but there is too much in each tube – I use only 1/3 of the tube at a time, then repeat monthly or as needed.

Try a spray bottle with water as a teaching aid / deterrent. Some people add a tiny bit of vinegar.

Voncia, you are completely incorrect. I have had ferals who became just as friendly as my indoor cats. Sometimes it takes years for that to happen, other times, just a few weeks.

I too, get those “love-bites”. I have two cats but only one gives me the bite. Here is one of the many reasons why they do it.
1) I use “Irish Spring” soap in the shower. She only bites me on my shin because of the fragerance this soap gives off when I get out. Apparently, the smell drives her to bite me there.  After the smell gets less & less, she couldn’t care less. And yes, I jump out of my boots everytime she bites me on my shin because I never know when it’s going to happen. Lol !

Carl – thanks for the story. I too picked out an abused cat at the shelter, horribly abused by some monsters. She hid for the 1st month – and one day I started whistling and she came out, jumped on the table and got up close to my lips..looking intently. That broke her shell – now she is a sweet little, trusting friend and loves to play.  It is very special when she jumps up in my lap and curls up to nap. Love conquers all.

My cat used to greet the neighbor’s cat nose to nose and then they each went about their own business.  It seemed more like a kind of truce.  

We have a wood burning stove in the basement of our home. We have three cats, but just the one cat loves to lay under the hot stove. He will not come upstairs at all in the winter. This cat loves the heat, and doesn’t like other cats around him. The other two Tom cats run all night, then are ready to come home the next morning for a rest and to eat.

Give your cat a piece of raw meat everyday to prevent dental disease? NO WAY. I am in the veterinary field, and this is certainly not recommended. Crunchy food doesn’t do a good job of  preventing dental disease in cats, why would soft, raw meat?? Cats teeth and gums are made of the same stuff ours is, and daily brushing with regular dental cleanings at a dentist are the only ways we can take care of our mouths successfully. Giving raw meat is a great way to give your cat diarrhea or parasites.
