The Reader's Digest Volunteer Vacation Giveaway (#424) is sponsored by The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. (Reader's Digest). Sweepstakes begins 5/16/08 and ends 8/30/2008.
1. ELIGIBILITY: Sweepstakes open to legal residents age, 18 and older, of the United States, its territories and possessions. Employees and members of the immediate families of employees of Reader's Digest, its affiliated or subsidiary companies, judging agents and promotion partners are not eligible. Sweepstakes is governed by the laws of the U.S.A. Sweepstakes is void where prohibited by law. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply.
2. HOW TO ENTER: You can enter this Sweepstakes via the Internet. Please go to www.rd.com/vacation and follow the online entry instructions. To be eligible all entries must be received by 11:59 .m. (Eastern Time) on 8/30/2008, the Sweepstakes Deadline Date. Only one entry per person per day, per entry opportunity, is permitted. All entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be returned. If multiple daily entries are received, only the first entry will be included and later entries will be disqualified. Each entry has an equal chance to win. Any dispute regarding submission of online entry will be deemed submitted by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at the time of entry. "Authorized account holder" is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by an internet access provider, online service provider, or other organizations (e.g. business, educational institute) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any person tampering with the operation of the website or the entry process.
3. PRIZES: One Grand prize of $15,000 cash and a one week (7 day 6-7 night trip for 2 to your choice of Peru, Guatemala, or Costa Rica. through Cross-Cultural Solutions) Approximate value of the trip is $2,855. The Total Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of the Grand Prize is $17,855. The trip includes accommodations at a Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS) Home-Base, transportation to and from airport in arrival country, and many other meals and activities (See program details below). It does not include airfare or transportation to and from airport of departure. Winner and guest must arrive at specified airport on start date. Should the Winner elect to not take a guest, or such guest is unable to accompany Winner, Winner shall forfeit that portion of the Grand Prize and the difference between the actual value of the Grand Prize and the stated ARV will not be awarded. The prize is not transferable cannot be assigned or substituted nor can the travel portion be redeemed for cash. Sponsors reserve the right to substitute a similar prize of equal or greater value in the event that the stated prize cannot be awarded due to circumstances beyond the control of the Sponsor. All expenses not specified herein are the sole responsibility of Winner and his/her Guest including, without limitation costs associated with obtaining a visa or immunizations (when needed), International and domestic airfare and corresponding airport departure taxes, personal Internet time and long-distance (domestic and international) phone calls, laundry service and pre/post accommodations. All taxes, if any are the sole responsibility of the winner, as well as travel risks, insurance, loss or damage due to prize acceptance or use. Neither the sponsor nor its affiliates or subsidiaries will be responsible for any loss, liability or damage arising out of the winner's acceptance or use of the prize. Winner and Guest may wish to obtain additional travel insurance (or other forms of insurance) at their own expense and hereby acknowledge that the Sponsor has not and will not obtain or provide travel insurance or any other form of insurance not specified herein. Winner and Guest must possess valid travel documents in order to travel.
4. PROGRAM BACKROUND AND DETAILS: Cross Cultural Solutions is a recognized leader in the field of international volunteering. Insight Abroad is the one-week program, offering the opportunity to work side-by-side with local people and experience another culture like never before. The winner's volunteer work is project-based, and designed with the goal of accomplishing the project within just one week. The project supports local initiatives who provide education or social services to the community; these include orphanages and childcare centers, schools, homes for the elderly, centers for people with disabilities, and other community organizations. The winner will be immersed deep in the heart of a community that warmly welcomes them, and fully supported by CCS expert in-country staff. From Country Directors to cooks to drivers, all local staff members are from the communities where they work, living and working there year-round. This gives them insight into the people and culture that only a local person would have. Placements are always carefully coordinated between the in-country staff and the organizations where the volunteers work, and they are finalized close to each start date to ensure that CCS is matching the immediate needs that the local organizations outline with the appropriate volunteers. Included in the program fee are the following things: Accommodations at a Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS) Home-Base. The typical housing consists of a comfortable house in a safe, conveniently-located neighborhood. Clean, modest accommodations with shared occupancy rooms are the standard. The CCS Home-Base always has basic amenities like linens and running water (including hot water where appropriate) and access to a telephone. Internet access is within walking distance:
Volunteer Placement with one of our Partner Programs including all the coordination, in-person visits and communication necessary with each local organization; In-country Cultural & Learning Activities including excursions to nearby points of interest, special events and discussions with a variety of local cultural, professional, governmental and community agencies and people; Cross-Cultural Solutions' Home-Base structure, providing you with a comfortable, safe place to live, the basic amenities, all of your meals, and transportation to and from all Cross-Cultural Solutions' placements and programming; An experienced U.S. based Cross-Cultural Solutions Program Manager (and former volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions) who will serve as your coordinator, guide, and liaison with our in-country staff; In-country basic language assistance (optional); Professional, locally-based staff to provide orientation, supervision and guidance throughout your stay; Travel medical insurance and emergency evacuation insurance, applicable to participants worldwide; Important documents, including in-depth volunteer handbook, orientation information, and in-country information material; Transportation to and from the airport, to and from Cultural & Learning Activities, and to and from your daily volunteer work placement; Local phone calls; In-coming international phone service; A toll-free 24-hour emergency hotline in the U.S.
5. SELECTION OF WINNER: Winner will be selected by random drawing from all eligible entries on or about 9/10/08 by an independent judging agency, whose decisions are final in all respects. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received. Approximate odds of winning are 1 in 75,000. Winner will be notified by mail (and those with known email addresses may be notified by email as well) within 30 days of the drawing and may be required to execute a Statement of Eligibility and Release and Payment Authorization within 30 days of prize notification attempt or Winner will be disqualified and prize may be awarded to an alternate winner. Return of prize or prize notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and an alternate winner may be selected. Entry and/or acceptance of prize(s) constitutes permission for the Sponsor and its agencies to use the winner's name, address (city and state) and/or likeness for advertising and trade purposes without further compensation or authorization, worldwide and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known and hereafter devised, unless prohibited by law.
6. CONDITIONS: By entering, participants agree to be bound by these complete Official Rules. Sponsor, is not liable for, late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, garbled or jumbled, stolen, postage due mail or illegible entries or for printing, distribution or production errors. Sponsor is not liable for any technical malfunctions of any telephone network or lines, computer internet system, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any email on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the internet or at any website, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this sweepstakes, or other technical difficulties or failures or other errors of any kind. Sponsor is not responsible or liable for any injury or damage to an entrant's or third person's computer and/or its contents, related to or resulting from Sweepstakes. Any person attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with this Sweepstakes will be ineligible for prizes and may be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Sponsor reserves the right to terminate or modify the sweepstakes at any time for any reason. In such circumstances prizes will be awarded based on entries received to date of termination. All prizes will be awarded.
