Alcoholism Medications
Are there any prescription drugs or medication that are used to treat alcoholism?
Transcript
Tiffany: Hi! I am Tiffany from Florida and I was wondering if there is any medication for alcoholism? Harriet De Wit: Tiffany there are a couple of drugs available, but it's really important to remember that drugs can only be used in the context of a larger sort of more behavioral or psychosocial treatment. The drugs that are available are first of all Antabuse which has been available for a quite a long time and then another drug called Naltrexone Revia and thirdly most recently a drug caleld Acamprosate. And each one of those drugs has some limited benefit in some people, but they should be used, they need to be used in the context of a behavioral more comprehensive treatment. You have to realize that alcohol use is a habit and it has a lot of learning associated with it and that's what you have to address in the behavioral portion.
