How well do you know the company you work for? Chances are, you've never seen its articles of incorporation or charter, but should you examine them, you might find a commitment from your company to society.
As citizens, legislators, and the media put pressure on corporations to take greater responsibility for the effects they have on the community and environment around them, many companies are enshrining their commitment to social responsibility in a charter. What's more, many companies agree to improve the world around them in exchange for lucrative tax benefits (think environmental regulation). And lots of companies these days have established charity partners and bylaws that promote volunteerism. For example, some companies will match the funds you raise for a charity, and some will make an annual contribution to any charity or nonprofit for which you volunteer. The rise in corporate activism and nonprofit funding reflects the growing desire of corporate entities to be seen as positive contributors to the country. Social responsibility can shore up a company's brand image and even attract loyal workers. Still, corporations are merely a collection of people, often busy with their primary goal of maintaining profitability. It's up to you to help realize the promise of your company's charter and take the corporation up on its willingness to serve humanity. Call your company's human resources department or inquire at corporate headquarters about charity partnerships and funding deals to encourage volunteerism.
Finally, use your company as a platform to launch volunteer projects. Once an employee organizes an event for a charitable cause, most companies will hop on board with financial and organizational help. Corporations have the strategic and managerial skills to pull off events, fundraisers, and large projects that go well beyond the ability of a single individual. By getting your employer involved in a great cause, you'll be able to make an even bigger difference.
