Inspired by our article "4 Ways of Looking at a Bicycle" in our June 2008 issue, reader Lloyd Smith of Longview, Washington wrote RD this letter:

While visiting the Democratic republic of the Congo, I saw a lot of adult-size tricycles that were converted for use by people with disabilities. The sprockets were turned upside down and mounted on the handlebars so that people who couldn't pedal with their legs could run the trike with their hands.

There is a non-profit company that provides these bikes (or ones like them) called PET - Personal Energy Transportation. They are world wide but the one I am most familiar with is out of Penney Farms, FL. The retirees work very hard to produce these bikes and when packing them, instead of using packing materials they pack the boxes with clothing, toys, and other items. http://www.petflorida.org I hope this helps bring this wonderful item to the public.
