Since taking the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's top job in 2004, President Susan Hockfield has made curing the world's energy crisis a campus-wide mission. She gets especially excited about MIT research projects to build a better battery. Why? Because, she says, batteries that are stronger and cleaner and can store more electricity are key to getting the most from alternative power sources like the sun and wind, and to producing improved hybrid vehicles. "Energy efficiency doesn't have to totally be about sacrifice," she says. "I actually see us having better cars and houses." That's our kind of school spirit.
