When Navy medic Chris Walsh first met nine-month-old Mariam, he knew he had to get her out of Iraq. The Iraqi girl was turned inside out due to a rare condition called bladder exstrophy, in which the organ develops outside the body. Without an operation, the child would soon die -- and there wasn't a surgeon in Iraq who could help her. After months of hard work and secret meetings, the dangerous mission was a success -- one that Walsh didn’t live to see.
