Mr. President, as a nation, we must fully recognize that the health ofthe environment is inextricably linked toour well-being and prosperity. Healthy, functioning natural systems and a stable climate support livelihoods, feed our families, sate our thirst, provide clean air, enrich us spiritually, and represent a legacy for future generations. These services provided bythe planet's lands and waters are of great value andare limited.
I urge you to make sustainability a guiding principle of your administration.
You can create an agenda premised on the notion that we should use resources at a rate no faster than they can be replenished.
A demonstrated commitment to sustainability will spark new progress toward developing clean sources of energy, fighting climate change, conserving our lands and waters, as well as rebuilding and strengthening our battered economy. You can inspire other governments around the world to make similar commitments, bringing about meaningful progress toward eliminating poverty and stopping the untenable destruction of the world’s forests and marine resources.
Mr. President, you can inspirea new "sustainable generation," one that understands the power of individual actions and the necessity of a collective commitment to a better way. Time and again, our nation has risen to new challenges, spurred on by leaders like you. Through inspiration, investment, and innovation today we can leave our children a better world tomorrow.
