Erin Donovan had just emerged from the post office when she saw two men streaking across the parking lot. "They stole my purse!" a woman screamed. The other people in the shopping plaza seemed unaware. Donovan figured she'd make enough noise to get everyone's attention. Hopefully somebody would stop the thieves. She sprinted after them, yelling. Donovan, an attorney, was no athlete. Nor was she dressed for a chase. That day she was ready for court in a tangerine-colored suit and three-inch heels. Still, she had to keep the men in sight until help arrived. She kept running. Two other women, Nona Manning and Virginia Wood, joined in.
Outside Starbucks, a security guard grabbed one of the purse snatchers. Donovan lowered her shoulders and rushed, nailing the other guy with a cross-body block right below his rib cage. Moments later, police arrested both men. And the victim, Elaine Stoeppelwerth, got her bag back.
