Not long ago, I thought a compost pile was something you only had in the country and fed to hogs. I’m still figuring out what my carbon footprint is. Point is, I’m the furthest thing from a crusader. I’m just getting to understand all this environmental stuff myself, so I think I’m in the same boat as most people. Here’s how I’m trying to do my part:
I bought hip wheels. My Prius was my gateway drug to green. It wasn’t so much about making a statement. I’d ridden in it and said, I kinda like it.I put solar panels on my house. It’s pretty cool because you’re giving energy back to the grid. Didn’t really understand how it worked, but it sounded a lot like The Matrix.
I take small steps. There are so many little things you can do, as explained in The Green Book (Three Rivers Press, 2007), for which I wrote an essay. For example, I used to leave the water running while I brushed my teeth. I don’t know why. It’s hard to change behavior, but it is possible. Also, who knew that going to a car wash uses less water than doing it at home? When I was little, my parents always had me doing chores like washing the cars. So I wish I knew that back then!
Turn it Off!
We used to make fun of my dad for being so bad with gadgets. He couldn’t figure out how to turn them off, so he’d just unplug them. Turns out, that’s what you should do. Unplug your cell phone charger, TV and other gadgets to avoid using the “vampire” energy.
