What We Can All Do

  • Be a private eye. Watch out for defects in roads and bridges. Form a neighborhood road reconnaissance crew -- that means knowing how and where to report problems before they become disasters.

  • Zip it. Membership rent-a-car companies are springing up in urban settings. Zipcar, in 40 cities around the country, is one example. Car sharing takes pavement-pounding extra cars off the street.

  • Upgrade. Voters in University City, Missouri, raised sales taxes a quarter cent to fix sidewalks and add streetlights, bike racks and benches downtown. Like these folks in the Show Me State, be prepared to pay your fair share for our national home-repair project
