In their first joint appearance of the Presidential campaign, Barack Obama and John McCain sat down with Pastor Rick Warren on Saturday, August 16. The best-selling author of The Purpose Driven Life and global philanthropist spent one hour talking with each of the candidates at his 22,000-member Saddleback Church in Orange County, California. ReadersDigest.com carried a live feed to the historic event.

At the candidates' request, the two-hour event was held in a non-debate format. The questions were asked exclusively by Warren, who spent one hour with each candidate.

A Purpose Driven Talk
"This is a critical time for our nation and the American people deserve to hear both candidates speak from the heart – without interruption – in a civil and thoughtful format absent the partisan 'gotcha' questions that typically produce heat instead of light," Warren said in a statement.

"Leadership involves far more than promoting programs and making speeches, and since no one can predict what crises will happen over the next four years, it is vital to know the decision capacity and process of each man," Warren said.
