Combining Adventure with Conservation in Peru
Cruising down a river in Peru surrounded by jaguars and wild birds is Paul and Jan Swartzentruber's idea of heaven. The Columbus, Ohio, retired chemist and teacher are among the rising number of Americans taking eco-vacations, visiting areas of amazing natural wonders while helping to conserve them and improve the life of locals. No matter where you go, it's all about what you do once you get there. In Peru, the couple hired guides with canoes rather than big tourist operations with gas-guzzling boats. They stayed at local lodges instead of resorts, where water and energy waste can be huge. It cost them $6,200, but eco-vacations range from hundreds, helping scientists on domestic projects, to $10,000, visiting the Maldives on a yacht.
