Q  I get a lot of fine dust when I sweep my concrete basement floor. What can I do to eliminate this problem?

J. Jones, Parkersburg, WV

A  Apply a clear penetrating concrete sealer (available at home centers). One coat should do it, but you can reseal every four to five years if the dust recurs.

Prepare the floor by sweeping it and then washing it with a concrete cleaner/degreaser. Any oil or grease spots will resist the sealer, so concentrate on areas where water beads up. Let the floor dry before you apply the finish. Look for water-based, low-odor products and make sure the area is well ventilated. Read and follow the label instructions for application.
