About This Project

Q  Off and on we hear something inside the walls of our home, usually the south wall. It sounds like an animal (mouse or chipmunk) running inside the wall. Is the sound caused by the vinyl siding expanding and contracting?
— Stuart Gelb, via e-mail

A  That’s probably right. Chances are that your vinyl siding was nailed too tightly. Vinyl siding tends to expand and contract considerably with temperature changes. For this reason, manufacturers design it to hang loosely on the nails rather than to be tightly nailed like wood siding.
