Don’t miss winter’s best deals

Forget December. January is the most wonderful time of the year—if you ask retail experts, that is. This otherwise-bleak month is when you can find truly amazing deals on a variety of must-have items. While COVID-19 has certainly changed the retail landscape, with more of us shopping online and some of our favorite stores closing their doors for good, it thankfully hasn’t stopped the sales. That said, some January sales traditions like Broadway Week won’t be happening this year, but we’re hoping they’ll be back soon.

In the meantime, here’s what we’ve got for this year: some of the great discounts that we always see after the holidays, and others that promise to be bigger and better than ever. Expect to see up to 90 percent off products that didn’t get scooped up in 2020—including seasonal decor, bedding, and electronics—as well as one discounted membership you won’t want to miss. It’s the perfect time to stock up on everything you need and get 2022 started off right. While you’re at it, find out the other best times to buy throughout the year.

Gym memberships

Gyms have been hit hard during the pandemic, and not all states are allowing members to exercise indoors at the moment. But if it’s all systems go in your area, January is the time to join. You can expect fantastic specials for two reasons: First, gyms are seriously hurting right now, so they’re doing what they can to entice new members. And second, this is the time when everyone makes their New Year’s resolutions; since getting in shape is always a biggie, gyms wisely provide a little extra incentive for people with this goal.

As in years past, gyms will be running specials all month long, says Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst with DealNews.com. “But if you wait until the end of the month to sign up, you might find a better discount compared with the beginning,” she notes. Plus, there’s a good chance your contract will also waive select fees that can add up to $100. Typically, at-home exercise equipment also goes on sale in January, but we don’t expect to see much of that this year, as demand has been incredibly high over the past eight months.

Televisions via amazon.com

Televisions

Missed your chance to get a brand-new TV on Black Friday? Try again in January, advises Kimberly Palmer, a personal finance expert at NerdWallet. Prices traditionally drop even more as it gets closer to the Super Bowl. (By the way, the big game is still on track for February 7, but it could be pushed to March.) Can’t wait? Amazon is already offering the Sony X800H 49-inch TV for $548, which is $100 off its normal price tag. Before you check out, you might also want to pick up a few of these Amazon products you’ll definitely use every day.

Calendars and planners via bedbathandbeyond.com

Calendars and planners

Do you love having a calendar or planner that you can physically write on? If so, wait until January to buy one for 2022. After January 1, they’re considered outdated, so they’ll be drastically reduced in price. Check out Office Depot, Paper Source, and any other place you typically purchase your calendar to snag a good deal. We love this large monthly “My Plan” planner from TF Publishing, which you can get at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Trying to be more organized this year? These are the 11 daily morning habits of highly organized people.

Bedding and towels

You’ve probably been spending a whole lot of time at home this year, so you may want to upgrade your coziest staples. Be on the lookout for January’s “white sales,” Ramhold says, which could start as early as January 1 and run through the entire month. When you see these sales pop up, expect to save up to 75 percent off bedding and towels, as well as other home items, including rugs and mirrors. A set of super soft and stylish Charter Club damask sheets from Macy’s will make your bed even cozier—and make you feel like you’re getting hotel-quality luxury every night.

Winter clothing

Yes, there’s still plenty of inventory after Black Friday, and if you waited to buy things like coats, mittens, and sweaters, you’re in for a treat. Winter may be far from over in January, but retailers are already preparing for spring, which means they need to move merchandise in order to make room for their warmer-weather arrivals. These deals are generally around 60 percent off in January, says consumer savings expert Andrea Woroch. We’re hoping that extends to the super popular Orolay Women’s Thickened Down Jacket, which has nearly 10,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. Oh, and while you’re at it, pick up some winter gear for your pup, too! Here are 12 cozy dog coats you’ll love.

Yep, food also gets discounted—especially holiday items like ham, turkey, wine, seasonal Christmas flavors, and all the other good stuff that people love to eat in December. You’ll also likely have luck with food gifts and seasonal baskets. Baking products usually go on sale in January, too, but seeing that we’re still in a pandemic, this aisle may be less discounted than in previous years.

Carpets via amazon.com

Carpets

Since home sales tend to peak in summer and fall, the price for carpeting and flooring also peaks during this time. Conversely, when home sales slow in January, it’s a good time to find a great deal on an area rug. We bet you have just the spot for this super-soft Cirlove shag rug, which boasts a velvety top and sponge interior. Keep your carpet in tip-top shape by cleaning it correctly and treating stains and spills immediately with these homemade carpet cleaners you already have in your house.

Furniture

Want to spruce up your place without spending a small fortune? Manufacturers start to release new models in February, so stores need to clear out their furniture in January. Discounts can be up to 50 percent—especially in darker colors, which tend to remind people of the winter months. You can’t go wrong with a Ladlow 90-inch fabric sofa from Macy’s, or you could have a little fun with a glam velvet accent chair in a whimsical color from Amazon. Skin-care products

Haven’t had a facial in nearly a year? Nab some discounted beauty products and indulge in a DIY spa day at home. Ulta is planning a Love Your Skin Event in January, with 21 days of crazy-good deals. They haven’t announced the specifics yet, but last year’s included Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for $37.50 (regularly $75). And, of course, Ulta isn’t the only retailer where you’ll have luck. Department stores, Sephora, and other spots that sell skin care will most likely also have major sales.

So, why are there so many beauty bargains in the dead of winter? “Much like the fitness category, as shoppers are working to better their workout routines, many are also wanting to revamp and upgrade their beauty regimens,” says Sara Skirboll, a shopping and trend expert with RetailMeNot. “From upgrading skin care to cosmetic and beauty tools, January will offer great discounts on all forms of beauty and skin care.” Consider stocking up on New York Biology’s Dead Sea Mud Mask if it’s on sale—it does wonders for skin in the long, dry winter months.

The holidays are over, but 2020’s toys are still lining the shelves. That’s a problem for them—and an amazing opportunity for you! According to Investopedia, many toys will be 70 percent off or more at spots like Target, Walmart, and other big-box retailers. Pro tip: Target’s January sale usually starts at 30 percent off and then goes to 50 percent before it reaches the coveted 70 percent by the end of the month, so be patient. Seasonal toys may even be up to 90 percent off, which can be great for next year if you’re the planning-ahead type. Speaking of which, Target hosts a similar sale in July, so put that on your calendar, too. For a trip down memory lane, take a look at the most popular toy the year you were born.

Head to the stores at the beginning of January for this one. “The longer you wait, the less you’ll have to choose from,” Ramhold says. Post-Christmas, expect stores like Target to discount holiday items by up to 75 percent off; home improvement stores like Lowe’s could take as much as 85 percent off. Pick up a festive outdoor Christmas tree decoration like this one from Michael’s (which is currently 50 percent off) or an LED menorah, and you’ll be all set for next year’s festivities! By the way, here are some clever ways to store your holiday decorations, according to professional organizers.

Electronics via bestbuy.com

Electronics

Black Friday usually offers the best deals of the year in this category, but you can get some great steals on everything from video games to computers right after Christmas, too. “Retailers know new models are on the way, so they want to unload last year’s models and free up shelf space,” Josh Elledge of Savings Angel told Investopedia. The 13.3-inch Apple MacBook Air, for example, is expected to go on sale, and it’s a fantastic computer. Here are another 50 cool tech gifts you might want to keep for yourself.

Jewelry via macys.com

Jewelry

All the pretty, sparkly, expensive stuff that didn’t sell over Christmas goes on sale in January, so this is another smart spot for sales. You’ll see everything from engagement rings to necklaces to bracelets at steep discounts. It’s a good time to snag that engagement ring if you’re planning on proposing over Valentine’s Day—and also the perfect time to treat yourself to a little something after the craziness that was 2020. You can’t go wrong with a pair of simple diamond studs or vintage-inspired pavé earrings. Remember: Wearing the right jewelry is one of the style secrets of women who always look put together.
