There’s not too much to love about February: it’s dark, cold in most spots, and not everyone gets Presidents’ Day off. But we do have one thing to look forward to this month. It’s the February sales. Stores are clearing out their winter gear as we head into spring—and they also have some surprising merchandise on sale. It’s time to shop. Find out the best time of year to get deals on these 43 things.

We can thank Valentine’s Day for this one, says Jill Gonzalez, an analyst with WalletHub. “Some of these discounts will continue through Presidents’ Day, and other categories will be added,” Gonzalez says. The best discounts will be up to 85 percent off jewelry, and up to 25 percent off flowers, says Julie Ramhold, consumer analyst with DealNews.com. Single? These are the best gifts to buy yourself on Valentine’s Day.
This follows jewelry’s lead. Expect to see 30 percent off chocolates and candy, Ramhold says. The sales will grow to up to 75 percent off in the days following Valentine’s Day—but act quickly, because if you wait too long, the heart-shaped boxes will be removed to make room for Easter baskets. You can generally count on Target to place seasonal items, like this bag of Ghirardelli Valentine’s Day White Chocolate Cremé Brulee squares, on sale the day after the holiday. Keep an eye out on discounts on these 30 top Valentine’s Day gifts you can buy at the drugstore.
Retailers are clearing out their winter gear to make room for spring collections, Ramhold says. “It’ll be a good time to buy accessories like knit hats and even cashmere scarves, which could fall to $5 and $15 respectively,” she says. Base layers, leggings, sweatshirts, and flannel shirts could fall to $6 or $7 each, and coats at your favorite retailers could be marked down by up to 70 percent.
Head to IHOP on February 25 for Mardi Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, aka Shrove Tuesday, which is celebrated in some countries with pancakes—and lots of them, Ramhold says. IHOP plans on celebrating by offering diners a free short stack of its buttermilk pancakes. You could also have the chance of winning free pancakes for life and other prizes. Or, stay home and whip up your own batch. Learn the history behind 12 popular Mardi Gras traditions.
If you need a new mattress, then Presidents’ Day is the time to get it, Ramhold says. You could see discounts of up to 60 percent for these. If you want new sheets and pillows to go with these mattresses, head to department stores, Walmart and Target, where these items will be up to 80 percent off over the weekend. Find out 18 more Presidents’ Day sales you’ll seriously regret missing.
Yes, the Super Bowl already passed, but you can still snag a TV at a great price so you can watch all your favorite reality shows, spring training games, and more. In general, the larger the TV, the greater the discount, says Kimberly Palmer, personal finance expert at NerdWallet based in San Francisco. While 17 percent of Americans planned on purchasing a new television for the Super Bowl, you can continue to snag a good model for less than $750 this month. The average TV budget is $753, according to a recent NerdWallet survey, but you can pick this one up for way less, which means you’ll have more than enough cash to pick up this universal TV remote while you’re at it.
Small kitchen appliances
These will see big discounts as the month goes on, particularly through Presidents’ Day weekend, Palmer says. She recommends shopping websites, including Best Buy, Overstock, and Mattress Firm, for the best deals. If you don’t have these 10 smart kitchen products, now is the time to invest.
Since new furniture arrives in the showroom at the end of the winter and again at the end of the summer, you’ll find discounts in February and in August so the retailers can clear out room for the new offerings. In fact, this is a fabulous time to redo your living room or dining room, according to U.S. News & World Report.
